The Day After Halloween...
How was Halloween??!?
Ours was great, and included a short and despairing breakdown (and lots of hugs!) at the end of the evening.
I made sure my kiddo had a little bag of organic, allergy free, and super-low sugar (but great packaging) candies so he felt like he fit right in with the kids at school munching on packaged candy during their Halloween party (even though he didn't eat the junky junk - wow I was impressed!).
I was reminded that food can be medicine, and some foods are scary drugs - addictive and crazy-making!
In fact, I experience cravings and a big slump of attitude and energy in the days after I eat too much sugary stuff too! (even if it's gluten and dairy free!)
The "Switch Witch" came last night, after we asked what my little boy thought about it, and even though he only had a little and it was organic and allergen free, we're all thrilled the candy is GONE.
Now it's time to reset and move forward, in the way we choose!
Here's our gut resetting (and sooo delicious and nourishing) breakfast.
Clean protein, rich bone broth (you can choose veggie broth if your child doesn't tolerate extra histamine at this time), veggies to feed those beneficial and calming microbes.
The warm, cozy applesauce, seasoned with nutmeg and cardamom, skins-on to bring in all that gut-healing pectin in such a tasty, irresistible way. Just cut up a couple of apples (tart, green are great!) with skins on, put in a small saucepan with a half-cup or so of water, and cook until soft. Season with nutmeg, cardamom, cinnamon... or a combination. Top with some vanilla unsweetened Tempt hemp milk or coconut milk!
We kept a couple of xylitol lollies for him to bring to school (again, a thoughtful choice to fit in with the other kids who would have candy, but he was also primed to share his story of the Switch Witch and the remote control car he's thrilled to be getting in trade).
Here's what he took for lunch and snacks today: probiotic-rich sauerkraut brine in chicken salad, with clean protein for energy and lots of colorful veggies like parsley, basil, carrot, pepper, and fennel to feed those happy bacteria; veggie sticks for crunchy palate exercising snacks; nori seaweed for vitamin, antioxidant, and minerals - including lots of calcium, plus you can make masks with it and then eat them; and those xylitol lollies.
And we're both eating more fermented veggies and doubling up on my favorite histamine-free probiotic, to recover a sugar-wacked belly ... we're moving back into balance, to support that calm and brightness in our attitudes and confidence, and to help support our digestion, nutrient absorption, and immune balance.
We LOVE Bifido Maximus from The Gut Institute.
Speaking of immune balance, this is when sooooo many families get sick and we get the heebie jeebies because everyone is coughing and sniffing in school, in the grocery store, and everywhere around us...
When you take the steps to recover and reset your family, it will put you at ease, and you can rest.
You resting is how you take care of YOU, so you can take care of your child. SO give yourself a break and pat yourself on the back. You did it! You're doing it! You get to take care of YOU!
What are you doing to recover and reset and rest now that Halloween is over, and the holiday season has begun??
Is this helpful to you?
Let me know!
Love,
Elissa
